Autograph letter signed : Carnegie Hall, New York, to Margaret [Vogelson], his cousin, [ca. 1920] June 21.

Discussing Somerset Maugham's The Moon and the Sixpence and the art of Paul Gauguin, whose work he does not like: "The Moon and the Sixpence is supposed to depict a French artist by the name of Paul Gauguin, whose paintings two of which are new in our Metropolitan Museum here and are priced clear up in the thousands. They are in a room of modern French art, most of which would scare a dog away and he would never come back. Gauguin's paintings are badly drawn but there is something about them which makes an impression. I passed them by till I know he was the Moon and Sixpence man."
